STEAM STEAM Study - Contact Form Heat & Aerobic Training for Pre-hypertensive Middle-Aged AdultsUniversity of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Institutional Review Board, Approved Protocol #15935 STUDY DESCRIPTION: This study is intended for inactive, middle-aged adults with untreated pre-hypertension who live in the Urbana-Champaign area, who are interested in a comprehensive program designed to enhance physical activity & reduce blood pressure. All participants will be asked to engage in a program developed in accordance with American Heart Association's recommendations. Specifically, our program will encourage and support lifestyle behavior changes such as quitting smoking, eating heart-healthy food, and reducing excessive alcohol, in addition to weekly exercise. The exercise program will involve a 14-week aerobic training program (3 weekly sessions, scheduled at your convenience), and 2 pre- and 2-post-testing sessions. Total testing time = Approximately 8 hours. Full study duration = 16 weeks. IMPORTANT DETAILSAll participants will be asked to comply with AHA guidelines for reducing blood-pressure, as well as our exercise prescription. Participants will also be randomly assigned to 1 of 2 groups: exercise-only or exercise plus steam-room. All participants will receive a FREE 4-month fitness club membership to the Refinery, 42 FREE supervised training sessions, a fitness evaluation, and upon completion of all study requirements, participants will also get to keep their digital home monitoring equipment (including a handheld bodyfat analyzer and bodyweight scale ~$80). Tentative Start Dates: Baseline Testing - January 2017, Exercise Sessions Scheduled as early as January 30th (study end ~May 15th, exercise ends ~May 6th)EXCLUSIONARY CRITERIAAll potential participants must complete a 20-25 minute screening over the telephone. A near complete list of exclusionary criteria is indicated below, and we ask that you complete the self-screening questions to facilitate the screening process. • Your current (untreated) blood pressure must be within the pre-hypertensive range (120-139 mmHG Systolic / 80-89 mmHG Diastolic). You are ineligible if you have normal BP (<120 mmHG / <80 mmHG) or if you are hypertensive (>140 mmHG / >90 mmHG) • You must have been physically inactive over the past 3 months (e.g., walking for less than 20 minutes, fewer than 3 times per week). If you exercise regularly (e.g., 3 or more days per week of continuous physical activity at an intensity that makes you sweat or breath hard) than you are ineligible for this study. • Unable or unwilling to comply* to American Heart Association guidelines for managing multiple lifestyle factors contributing to high blood pressure (*unwilling to comply means you won't even attempt the behavior changes recommended by AHA) • Unable to commit to full length of program • Incapable of performing moderately intensive aerobic exercise • Unwilling to be randomized to one of two groups • Already involved in regular weekly relaxation methods (e.g., yoga, meditation) or heat therapy (e.g., steam-room, sauna, hot baths) • Have heat sensitivity (e.g., heat-induced severe rashes, pain, numbness, or tingling; experienced heat-related cramps, illness, or heatstroke; or had surgery requiring general anesthesia that has caused subsequent difficulty regulating body temperature) • Have neuropathy (e.g., peripheral, diabetic) • Unable to commute to and from the Refinery fitness facility on W.
